Stage 1 — software only

Stage 1 optimises the factory software without touching the mechanicals — it uses the margin the manufacturer already left. It works on a completely standard car and is the safest form of tuning. We explained it in detail in What is Stage 1.

Stage 2 — software + hardware

Stage 2 goes a step further: hardware parts are fitted first so the engine can “breathe” better, and only then is a map made to match that hardware. Without the right software the hardware does not give its full effect — and the other way round.

What hardware usually goes with Stage 2

  • Downpipe / sport catalyst — better exhaust flow.
  • Bigger intercooler — lower intake temperatures and more stable power.
  • Sport filter / intake, and on some engines an uprated clutch.

Typical Stage 2 candidates are stronger petrols and diesels where the owner wants the maximum — e.g. Golf GTI/R, Audi S3, BMW 320d/335i. On smaller engines Stage 1 is usually the right measure.

Engine life and warranty

Both Stage 1 and a well-executed Stage 2 stay within the limits the hardware can handle — provided the engine is healthy and serviced regularly. With us both come with diagnostics, logging and a backup of the original. More on measuring in Data logging.
