What the EGR actually does
EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) feeds part of the exhaust gas back into the intake. That lowers the combustion temperature, and a lower temperature means fewer nitrogen oxides (NOx) — that is the entire point of the system.
The by-product is that soot and oil vapour from the crankcase breather also enter the intake manifold. Mixed together, they form a sticky deposit that builds up on the valve, the cooler and the manifold.
Why your car in particular clogs up
- Short trips — the engine rarely reaches operating temperature, so the deposit never dries out and simply sticks.
- A faulty crankcase breather (PCV) — excess oil in the intake speeds up fouling many times over.
- A fouled EGR cooler — often a worse offender than the valve itself, and far easier to overlook.
- Fuel and oil quality — more soot means faster build-up.
How it shows up
Typical symptoms are a loss of power and a “choked” feeling low down, a rough idle, black smoke, higher fuel consumption and of course the engine warning light. On some engines an EGR stuck open drops the car straight into limp mode.
Important: the same symptoms come from the turbo, the air flow sensor or a blocked DPF. That is why we measure first and only then start undoing bolts.
Solutions that actually work
- 01 — Diagnostics and logs. We compare actual EGR flow against the requested value — that shows whether the valve is working at all.
- 02 — Cleaning the valve and intake. In most cases this brings the engine back to normal, especially if the cooler is cleaned too.
- 03 — Fix the cause. If the PCV is letting oil into the intake, cleaning is only temporary — the deposit comes back.
- 04 — Replacement. When the valve is mechanically or electrically faulty and will not hold position.
And switching it off in software?
