How the DPF actually works

The DPF traps soot from the exhaust gas and periodically burns it off in a process called regeneration. Passive regeneration happens by itself on a longer motorway run, while active regeneration is triggered by the ECU injecting extra fuel once the filter fills up.

The trouble starts when active regeneration is constantly interrupted — typically on short city trips. Soot builds up, the car drops into limp mode, and the story about a “broken DPF” begins.

Myths we hear every day

  • “The DPF has to come out as soon as it plays up.” Not true — in most cases a forced regeneration or a clean brings the filter back into service.
  • “Short trips do no harm.” They do — regeneration never completes and the filter fills faster than it empties.
  • “Additives fix everything.” Additives can help a healthy system, but they do not fix the cause — a faulty sensor, EGR or thermostat.
  • “With the DPF gone the car is the same, only stronger.” Removal without the matching software change causes fault codes, smoke and problems at the roadworthiness test.

Real solutions, in order

  • 01 — Diagnostics. First we establish why the filter is filling: pressure sensor, EGR, thermostat, driving style…
  • 02 — Forced regeneration. A service procedure that burns off the accumulated soot under control.
  • 03 — Professional cleaning. When the filter is saturated with ash, machine cleaning restores flow close to factory.
  • 04 — Replacement. Only when the honeycomb is physically damaged or melted.
