What AdBlue is and how SCR works

AdBlue is not a fuel additive. It is a urea solution injected into the exhaust ahead of the SCR catalyst. There, nitrogen oxides (NOx) are chemically converted into nitrogen and water vapour — that is the only reason a modern diesel meets Euro 6 limits.

The system consists of a heated tank, a pump, a dosing injector and at least two NOx sensors. The ECU monitors every one of them — and the moment something is off, the countdown begins.

The most common faults

  • NOx sensors — by far the most common culprit. They are expensive, and they live in hot exhaust gas, so their life is limited.
  • Urea crystallisation — AdBlue dries out and builds up deposits in the injector, especially with short trips and long periods parked.
  • Pump and tank heater — AdBlue freezes at about −11 °C; if the heater fails, the system throws a fault in winter.
  • Poor quality AdBlue — an opened container or fluid of dubious origin quickly fouls the injector.

The countdown — why it is urgent

When the ECU registers a fault, a message such as “Engine start disabled in 800 km” appears. That is not a suggestion but a legally mandated lockout: when the counter reaches zero, the car will not start again until the fault is fixed.

So an AdBlue fault is not something to put off. The sooner it is diagnosed, the cheaper the repair — and the less likely you are to be stranded.

Real solutions, in order

  • 01 — Diagnostics. We read the fault codes and the live values of both NOx sensors, the pressure and the dosing rate — that shows exactly what is at fault.
  • 02 — Cleaning the injector. Where it is crystallisation, no parts are usually needed — a service procedure is enough.
  • 03 — Replacing the faulty part. Most often a sensor, less often the pump or the heater.
  • 04 — Resetting the counter. Only once the cause is genuinely fixed — otherwise the fault returns within a few hundred kilometres.
