Why people come for a check
- Buying a used car — the seller says “just a mild map”, and nobody actually knows what is inside.
- The car behaves oddly — it jerks, drops into limp mode, smokes or uses more fuel than before.
- Fault codes that keep coming back — cleared, then back again after a few drives.
- Doubts about the quality — 60 hp was promised, but the car pulls no differently than before.
What we look at
First the software is read out of the ECU and compared against the original for that exact version. That shows whether and how much was changed, and whether the change was made with a tool that respects the checksums.
Then we look at what was changed: torque limits, boost pressure, fuel quantity, timing — and whether the protective functions were touched: temperature limits, knock protection, oil pressure monitoring.
What we most often find in bad maps
- Protections switched off. The most dangerous item — the engine is left without its safety net just to make a number look bigger.
- A generic map. A file downloaded for “the same engine”, regardless of ECU version, fuel or the condition of the car.
- Unrealistic targets. Requested boost the hardware cannot deliver — the turbo spends its whole life at the limit.
- No backup. The original was never saved, so going back to factory is impossible without sourcing the file.
- Fault codes left behind. The change was made but the monitoring functions were never aligned — the warning light keeps returning.
What you get after the inspection
You get a clear report: whether the car was modified at all, how far it deviates from the original, whether the protections are in place and whether it is safe to keep driving. Plus a log showing how the engine actually behaves with that map.
From there you have three routes: leave it as it is if it is sound, rework the map properly, or return it to factory state.
